Eugene R. Stelter

    Eugene R. Stelter, 76, of Ferryville, died Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care, Viroqua, WI. Eugene was born in Ontario, WI on February 25, 1941, the son of William and Marvel (Hoffert) Stelter. He married Janette Johnson on June 18, 1960 in Janesville. They spent the majority of their marriage in Janesville until Eugene retired in 1996 and they moved to Ferryville.

     Eugene worked at the General Motors plant in Janesville for 32 years. Eugene along with his brothers Jim and Lefty built houses for each of them.  They also built a few houses for friends and family. He also did many remodeling and roofing jobs which funded his favorite pastimes, hunting, and fishing, though fishing was his favorite by far. He could be considered a “fish whisper” as he always knew where the fish were and what the best bait or technique to use which would result in the biggest or most fish.

     Eugene is survived by his four daughters: Cheri (Jim) Zahasky, Black River Falls, Meri (Jay) Deremo, Christine Baumann, and Teresa (Joe) Guerra all of Janesville, one son, David Stelter of Footville, 20 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.  One sister, Violet Revels of Sparta, and three brothers, Donald (Cozy) Stelter of Sparta, James (Hilda) Stelter Janesville, and Bruce (Judy) Stelter of Sister Bay, WI.and many nieces and nephews.

     He was preceded in death by his wife, Janette on October 30, 2014. His parents, his siblings Jr., Lorraine, Betty, Bob, Vivian (Ginger), Margaret, Mary Lou (Trudy), Duane (Popeye), Al, LaVern (Lefty), Darlene, Loane (Ann), Lester (Doc) and Dale. And his favorite fishing buddy, nephew, Jerry Revels.

     The family would like to express their appreciation for the care and compassion he received from the staff of the Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care during the last month.

     A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, with Reverend William Clyma officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta.

     Family and friends are invited to call from 10 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the funeral home. 

     The Lanham-Schanofer Funeral Home, Sparta, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
