Eva L. Clay, 89, of Sparta, died Sunday, August 6, 2017 at Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta. Eva Louise Clay was born on October 29, 1927 to Fred and Goldie (Wakefield) Scheid in the township of La Fayette, Monroe County, near Sparta. Eva graduated from Sparta High School in 1945 and attended St. Francis School of Nursing in La Crosse from 1945 to 1947, completing her LPN certification.
On October 11, 1947, she married Donald Clay at St. Matthew’s Church in Warrens, Wisconsin. They lived in Tomah from 1947 to 1954 and then moved to Sparta. Eva was employed as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Sparta from 1954 to 1987, when she retired.
Eva was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Ladies Aid, the Morrow Memorial Home Auxiliary, the Franciscan-Skemp Hospital Auxiliary, the Sparta AARP, the Isham Valley HCE Club, the Sparta Senior Citizens, and the Angelo Coffee Club.
Survivors include sons, Stephen (Marlene) Clay of Spooner, WI and David Clay of Minneapolis, MN; grandson, Ross (Amy Walker) Clay; two great grandsons, Presley and Jamison; and great granddaughter Karsyn, all of Eau Claire, WI; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friend, Lynn Merow of Daneville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Donald in 2010; one sister, Vera Evans; three sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; four nephews and two nieces.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to St. John’s Lutheran Church or the Sparta Area Cancer Society.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at St. John’s Ev Lutheran Church, Sparta, with Reverend John Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to call from 9 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the church.
The Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
