John A. Brockman

   John Arthur Brockman, 75, of Sparta, died on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Rolling Hills Rehabilitation Center, Sparta.  He was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Sparta on September 19, 1941 to Samuel G. and Electa (Shaw) Brockman.

     John lived on the family farm in the Leon, WI area with his mother, two brothers, Otto and Sam and two sisters, Darlene (Wally) Pohl and Ardel Lakowske.

     He married Karen Jane (Fahrenkrug) Brockman on July 3, 1971.  One child was born to that union, Eric John Brockman on June 9, 1975 in Red Wing, MN.

     John was baptized a member of the Community of Christ Church on December 14, 1952.  He was baptized by Cecil Robbins and confirmed by Ike Brockman.

     John’s first job off the farm was at Earl Forbush’s service station.  He also lived and worked in California for a short time before returning to Sparta and decided he needed more schooling so he attended and graduated from WWTI in La Crosse for business.  From there, he worked at Fort McCoy until he retired in 1997 for health reasons.

     John enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers, Otto and Sam, and like his brothers, enjoyed working on cars. He also enjoyed working on small electronics and enjoyed playing cards with friends.

     John and Karen celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 1996 with a reception at the Community of Christ Church in Sparta and celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary at Rolling Hills in 2015.

     He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

     John is survived by his son, Eric; two sisters, Darlene (Wally) Pohl, and Ardel Lakowske; nieces Terri (Gary) Oswald, and Katie (Jason) Opper; their children, Gavin and Taylor; one nephew, Brian (Cindy) Pohl and his child, Eria Rose Pohl; sister-in-law, Betty Brockman; other family cousins, and friends.

     John is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Electa; two brothers, Otto Brockman, and Samuel Brockman; his wife, Karen Brockman of almost 46 years; brother-in-law, Victor Lakowske.

     A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 3, 2017 at the Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, with Elder James Edwards officiating.  Burial will be at Big Creek Union Cemetery, rural Sparta.

     Family and friends are invited to call at the Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be given to Gundersen Heart Foundation, La Crosse. 

     The Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, is assisting the family with arrangements.
