Leona M. Hemmersbach, 92, of Sparta, died Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta. She was born in Spring Valley in Norwalk, WI May 14, 1924 to Gustave and Bertha (Oldenberg) Vieth.
Leona met William Hemmersbach at a dance, and later they married on December 27, 1945 on St. Mary’s Ridge. Leona and William farmed until 1955 when they moved to Cashton. She spent many years as a childcare provider, she was known to all the kids as “Ona”. Leona enjoyed baking, cooking, bingo, and word searches. Most of all, she loved playing cards with family and friends. Leona was a loving mom and a wonderful caregiver to her husband, William.
Leona is survived by her four children: Joyce Sonday, Sparta; Judy (Bob Scopin) Hemmersbach, Huntington Beach, CA; Walter “Wally” (Kathy) Hemmersbach, Cashton; and Carol (Marvin) Brueggen, Sparta; her grandchildren, Lynn (Nate) Isensee, Cashton; Lori (Scott Sanders) Hemmersbach, Westby; and Chad Sonday, Sparta; her step grandchildren, Marc (Amy) Brueggen, Sparta; and Kim (Greg) Hoffman, Sparta. She is further survived by her great grandsons, Zack Bohland, Westby; and Ross Isensee, Cashton; and five step grandchildren, Cody (Steph) Brueggen, Whitewater; Brandon Brueggen, Cashton; Seth (Tara) Hoffman and Jermey (Sarah) Hoffman, both of Black River Falls; and Alissa Hoffman, Sparta; a brother, Donald (Lillian) Vieth, Winona, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hemmersbach on March 25, 1989; parents, Gustave and Bertha; a sister, Goldie Brueggeman; a brother, Raymond Vieth; a son in law, Carroll Sonday; and a step granddaughter, Lisa Pfaff.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 15, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sparta, with Fr. Keith Kitzhaber officiating. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Cashton.
Family and friends are invited to call from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass.
