Richard R. Ames, 81, of Tomah, died Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Tomah Memorial Hospital. He was born June 3, 1936 in Viola, Wisconsin. He grew up in Viola and graduated from Viola High School or “Viola Tech” as he used to call it.
Richard served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany. He married Sherry Anderson on June 16, 1962 in Viroqua, WI. After marriage, they lived in Loves Park, IL. He worked for Barbara- Coleman Factory in Rockford and owned and operated two Standard Stations. Richard and Sherry moved back to Wisconsin in 1967 and farmed on the Roberts Farm in Coles Valley from 1967 until 1984. He farmed in Farmers Valley from 1984 until 1986. He worked for Handishop Industries from 1986 till 2008. Richard enjoyed gardening, yard work and cutting wood.
Richard is survived by his wife, Sherry of Tomah; his sons, Joe Ames and Jeff (Laura) Ames, both of Sparta; his grandsons, Matthew Ames and Andrew (Jean) Ames; and 1 great-grandson. He is further survived by his siblings, JoAnn Leatherberry, of Viroqua and Gerald Ames Jr. of Rockford, IL.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 16, at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, with Reverend Mark Kvale officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by VFW Post 2112 will follow in Mound Prairie Cemetery, Coles Valley.
Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
