Daniel E. Mikkelson, 68, of Wonewoc, WI and formerly of Sparta, died Monday, June 11, 2018 at his home in Wonewoc after a courageous battle with cancer.
Dan was born on October 1, 1949 in rural Cashton to Ruby and Victor Mikkelson. Even as a young boy, he clearly was interested in “how things worked”, which was part of his standard answer when asked by his parents why he had taken apart new toys! When he reached the age of 10 or 11, he enjoyed spending time at a Sparta gas station. He developed a liking for and knowledge of working with cars. This background served him well and enabled him to become successful as a mechanic and auto body specialist.
Upon returning from Vietnam, where he served from September 1969 until July 1971, he lived in Florida, where he owned his own business, specializing in auto mechanics and body work including contracts with three car rental agencies in the Palm Beach area. In 2006, he relocated to Wisconsin to be closer to his family. Once again he established his own business using his self-taught skills in repairing and rebuilding computers.
Dan is survived and will be sadly missed by his loving sisters, Margaret (Al) Namejunas of Eau Claire, WI, Myrna (Ken) White of Lake Park, FL, Karen Geier of La Crosse, and Edith (Wally) Habhegger of Sparta; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death and will be joining his parents, Ruby Meiller and Victor Mikkelson; and a grand niece, Devon Jenson.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19th at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, with Reverend Mark Kvale officiating. Military Honors provided by VFW Post 2112 of Sparta will follow at the funeral home. Private family burial will be at a later time in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to call from 10 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home.
The Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, is assisting the family with arrangements.
