Darrell J Helmenstine

     Darrell J. Helmenstine, 91, of Sparta, died Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Rolling Hills Nursing Home, rural Sparta. He was born June 26, 1927, in Mt. Horeb, WI to Darrell W. and Anne (Lingard) Helmenstine.

     Darrell married Dorothy E. Slauson with whom he had three children. They later divorced. He married Audrey J. Fritsch in April of 1966. They spent 55 happy years together.

     Darrell was a 1945 graduate of Madison East High School. Following high school, he spent two years in the US Navy. Darrell worked for Eggiman Motors in Madison, he managed Zarandts Chevrolet in Middleton, and managed Boehck Construction Rental Equipment Co. in Madison. He retired from Daniels Construction Co. in 1999; at which time he and Audrey moved to Sparta.

     Darrell is survived by his wife, Audrey; a daughter, Vicky and her daughter, Melissa; a daughter, Sherry and her daughter, Jessica; and several cousins and friends.

     He was preceded in death by his parents.

     A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 19, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sparta, with Monsignor Richard Gillis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

    Family and friends are invited to call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.schanhoferfh.com

    In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
