I to this day remember being a student in the mid 80's transitioning from Leon school out in the country to the "Big" Junior high school as a 7th grader. I was nervous about the new surroundings and overwhelmed by all of the students. Mrs. Olson was very kind and reassuring to me about the new school the first morning I got there. I was so happy when I found I also had her for P.E. and homeroom. I know she was a special women and am very sorry for your loss, but she is a lady that will always be in my thoughts. I actually regret in my later years not telling her how big of a deal that made for me on my first day of junior high school.

Dave, Brian, and Kristin,
"Mrs. O" was a fixture in my life growing up - whether at church, Junior High, or gatherings at your home. I still have fond memories of your back-yard golf course. Her creativity and love for students was tremendous. She always seemed to have time to talk to young people and offer them encouragement. My favorite of her quotes was this: Once she and my mom (Sandie) were talking about reading, and she told my mom all the books she was reading. My mom said, "Joanie, how do you find the time to read as much as you do?" Her reply? "Sandie, I have the same twenty-four hours in a day that you do. It's how we choose to use them." I love that. I'm sad she's gone but was blessed to have known her. I know you'll keep her memory alive.
Andy

Dear Dave & family-
I was just in Wisconsin visiting family and was told that Joan was very ill. My heart hurts for your hearts! Joan was a "shining light of enthusiasm" in all that she did!! I graduated from Sparta in 1963 and I sang at graduation. At our 50th reunion Mary Olsen & I got to finally sing our duet, "You'll never walk alone"......after we sang, Dave ,you both came up and thanked us and told me we had made you CRY and that you had wept in 1963!! I was SO honored by your kind words; and also the fact that you both took time out of your busy lives to come and share this evening with "us kids"!! I would have SUNG for you both if I had been able to stay. I shall think of you on the day of saying good-bye and know that if I could have, I would have sung Joan home!! Sending you my heartfelt thoughts and LOVE!! Peggy

My condolences to family and close friends. I played golf for La Crosse Central in the 90's and I have fond memories of Joan and the girls she coached at Sparta back then. She was a truly lovely person who always had a smile for everyone, both on and off the course.

Be at peace now, my dear friend. I carry you in my heart.
May the strength of Joan carry the family forward.

Condolences to family. She was fairly new to SHS when she was my gym teacher -class of '61. Later we had seasonal camping site near Aberdeen Md at Long Bar Harbor Camp Ground and one weekend her and husband pulled in there. I recognized them and it was lovely to see someone from Wisc. Of course they were trying MD blue crabs. RIP

Dear Dave & Family: We are so VERY SORRY for your great loss. Joanie was such a wonderful gal, warm and inviting, always cheerful and smiling and upbeat. We will miss her and remember her always. She loved Ron's hugs and because we are now in Fla., Ron wasn't able to "dish" those out to her as much as he would've liked.
Again, our deepest sympathies to all of you and we will always remember her as a true and special friend. Blessings, Ron & Jan
