LeRoy “Roy” A. Slawson, 84, of Sparta, died Sunday, October 7, 2018 at the Tomah VA Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born April 24, 1934 to the late Willis and Beulah (Hillesheim) Slawson in Kellogg, MN.
At the age of 15, LeRoy moved to North Bend, WI. LeRoy married the former Carol Willgrubs on June 19, 1954. She preceded him in death on September 19, 2017.He served his country in the US Army from April of 1956 to April of 1958. LeRoy worked at Northern Engraving in Sparta until his retirement in 1994. He enjoyed cat fishing, hunting, gardening, wood working, and baking; he especially enjoyed making heart shaped birthday cakes for his children and grandchildren. He and Carol loved going on camping trips to Brunet Island on the Chippewa River.
He is survived by his three children, Debbie Warthan; James (Chris) Slawson; and Lori Slawson; his grandchildren, Shawna; Tim; Danielle (Jeff); Bobbi (Clint); Dustin; Mathew; and Brandon; and many great grandchildren. He is further survived by three sisters in law, Betty Baeten; Doris Willgrubs; and Mildred Slawson; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Roger Swigart and Jeff Warthan.
In addition to his wife, Carol and parents, Willis and Beulah, he was preceded in death by his sister, Freda (Walter) St. Jacques; and two brothers, Vernon Slawson and Arthur (Mary) Slawson.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the team at Hospice Touch of Tomah and the entire staff at the Tomah VA in building 401 B for the exceptional care and compassion given to Roy.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, at the Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, with Reverend Brian Young officiating. Burial will be held at a later time in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Sparta.
