Luther L. Barclay, 81, of Mindoro, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse.
He was born September 14, 1936 in La Crosse to Floyd and Mildred (Fischer) Barclay and graduated from Mindoro High School in 1954. On April 13, 1957, Luther married Fernella Gilbertson and they raised 4 children. For the first five years of their marriage, he hauled canned milk but then took over the family farm from his father in rural Mindoro. He worked on the farm until retiring in 1998.
Luther was a lifelong member of Christ Evangelical Church in Burr Oak, having been baptized on October 11, 1936 and confirmed on May 14, 1950. He served as an elder and church president. He also belonged to the La Crosse County Pork Producers and Farm Bureau.
Luther enjoyed watching the Badgers and Packers play as well as the Brewers and Cubs. He was an avid euchre player and loved to play cards with different groups in the area throughout the years.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Fernella; three sons, David (Marlyce) Barclay, Dale Barclay, and Ken (Tammy) Barclay; one daughter, Karla (Blake) Young; seven grandchildren, Eric (Kristi) Barclay; Melissa (Brandon) Sands; Rachel (fiancé, Paul Jones) Barclay; Kristin Barclay; Devan (Cayley Peters) Young; Jordan Young; and Taylor (Shia) Vang; two great-granddaughters, Abigail and Elise Barclay; sister-in-law, Beatrice Rhyme; and brother-in-law, Leland (Barbara) Gilbertson.
Luther was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers-in-law; and three sisters-in-law.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 9, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Burr Oak with Pastor John Werner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to visit with the family from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to Christ Ev Lutheran Church, Burr Oak or the Farmington First Responders.
