Nancy Hendricks Obituary

Nancy Lee Hendricks, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother passed away early May 23rd at Gundersen Medical Center in La Crosse following a sudden onset of pneumonia. She had been living comfortably at Morrow Home’s Homestead Apartments for about one year, visited daily by her husband of 65 years, David Hendricks.

Nancy was born May 9, 1936 to Warren “Babe” and Ella Lakowske Hammon in Cataract Wisconsin, where she grew up and lived until she met and married the love of her life, Dave, her Sparta High School sweet heart.  Dave and Nancy began their life together in Prairie du Chein, Wisconsin, where she began her professional career as a copy writer and advertising consultant at Radio WPRE and where daughter, Jill Lynne, was born. The family returned to Sparta in 1960.

Nancy continued her career working at WCOW, The Job Corps, Bank of Sparta, Union and National Bank retiring from Monroe County Register of Deeds Department in 1997.

Nancy was an active participant in the Sparta Jaycettes and WBPW.  She volunteered time and treasure to countless charitable organizations, foundations, worthy local causes and family and friends in need, and the Methodist Church.

Nancy and Dave enjoyed boating and water skiing on the Mississippi in summers and took up downhill skiing for something to shorten winters. They took several ski trips to California and Colorado, boating adventures to the gulf, toured New England and visited family and friends throughout the country.

They were thrilled when their two grandsons came along and were active in their lives as well; accompanying grandson, Joe, on a Boy Choir tour of Ireland and attending football games to see Alex, play at St. Johns in Collegeville MN; to name some highlights.

Plenty of life-long friend ships were made with her wonderful group of Sparta friends, Jill’s high school buddies, her family of nieces and nephews, and later, her extended Coughlin family.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Dave; her daughter, Jill (Dan) Coughlin, La Crosse; grandsons, Joseph David Coughlin, La Crosse; Alex Thomas (Britta) Coughlin, and the newest addition to the family, great grandson, Shepherd John Coughlin, Sanford, CA. She is further survived by her sister, Rosella Jenkins, Sparta; and a sister-in-law, Juno (Ken) Anderson, Camarillo CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Babe and Ella Hammon; brothers, Hansel Hammon and Eugene Hammon; sisters, Virgie Washburn, Beatrice Hofstrand, Adeline Ogan, and Lois Brown; a great niece, Heidi Prager and nephew-in-law, Joel Konze.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, at the Cataract United Methodist Church, with Reverend Roberta Nowicki officiating. Burial will be at a later time in Cataract Cemetery.

Visitation for Nancy will be Wednesday, from 4-6 p.m. at the Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, and Thursday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Online condolences may be offered to the Hendricks family at www.schanhoferfh.com.

Memorials may be directed to the Cataract United Methodist Church, Cataract.
