Richard “Dick” L. Walters, 82, of Sparta, died Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at the Tomah VA Medical Center, Tomah. He was born on February 20, 1935 to the late Lyle and Eva (Ammerman) Walters in La Crosse.
Dick graduated from Sparta High School with the class of 1953. Following high school he enlisted in the Army National Guard and served until 1963. He married Dorothy Dorsey on June 18, 1960, in Sparta. She preceded him in death on October 13, 2014. He liked to go gambling and old country music. Dick had a passion for cooking, was an avid Packers fan, he loved going to grocery stores and the annual Sparta Butterfest festivities. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his three daughters, Stepheny (Ralph) Rostkowski, of Rockland; Sheryl (Terry) Brooks, of Dixon, MO; and Stacy (Steven) Green, of Sparta; his nine grandchildren: Melissa Lane, James (Heather) Reed, Jeremy (Lisa) Reed, Michelle Reed, Marsha Reed, Nicole (Sean Clayton) Green, Lindsay Mashak, Mandy (Troy) Berry, and Monica Walters. He is further survived by his 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Doris) Walters, CA; a brother-in-law, Paul Worman, of La Crosse; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
In addition to his wife, Dorothy and parents, Lyle and Eva, he was preceded in death by his son, Steven Richard Walters.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 29, at the Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, with Chaplin Priscilla Hemmersbach officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by VFW Post 2112 will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Sparta.
