Roger E. Matson Jr., 49, of Sparta, passed away Sunday, February 17, 2019 at Mayo Clinic Health System, La Crosse, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Long Island, New York on May 21, 1969 to Roger Sr. and Elaine (Smith) Matson.
Roger grew up in Patchogue, New York. He moved to Sparta and lived there from ages 9 to 12. He graduated from Patchogue-Medford High School in 1987. He then attended Long Island Technical School and earned an Associate’s Degree in Electronics. He started working for IKON in New York and transferred to Minnesota in 1993 and then later to Wisconsin where he worked until 2002. He then worked for E O Johnson.
Roger married Brenda Downing on June 23, 2001 at the United Methodist Church in Sparta. To this union were born their sons, Connor and Jordan.
Roger was a Mason and a Shriner. He enjoyed golfing and riding Harley Davidsons.
Roger is survived by his wife, Brenda; two children, Connor and Jordan of Sparta; mother, Elaine of Sparta; sisters, Dawn (Don) Bindrim, of Long Island, NY and Joanne Matson of Sparta. He is further survived by his sister-in-law, Wendy (Paul) Ahles of Hopkins, MN; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Roger was preceded in death by his father and his in-laws, Richard and Donna Downing.
A memorial service will be held for Roger at 11 AM on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, with Reverend Loretta Waughtal officiating.
Family and friends are invited to call from 4 PM until 7 PM on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, with a Masonic Service beginning at 6:30 PM, and again on Thursday from 10 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, is assisting the family with arrangements.
