Shelvie D. Urfalino

     Shelvie Dee (Labus) Urfalino was born on April 26, 1937 to Wilbur S. Labus and Vivian F. Scafe at St. Anne’s Hospital in La Crosse, WI. She attended St Paul Lutheran School in Bangor and Bangor High School until graduation in 1954.  She worked at Fort McCoy where she met and married Paul Urfalino who was serving in the US Army. They lived for several years in Brooklyn, New York where Paul grew up, before returning to Sparta to live. Together, they had two children, Carl and Suzanne.

     Shelvie enjoyed cooking, quilting, knitting, bowling, and especially golfing. She loved playing cards every week with her friends from the Neshonoc Camp Grounds. She kept busy with card games, word searches, and crossword puzzles from the newspapers. She loved flowers and gardening, and canning jellies and her special Spaghetti sauce. She would bake breads and cupcakes just to give away to everyone she knew. She belonged to St. John’s Lutheran Church and the St John’s Ladies group.

     She worked for Fort McCoy in transportation for most of her working life. She loved taking care of the soldiers and had great pride and respect for all of them.

     Shelvie is survived by a grandson, Carl P. Urfalino Jr. from Sparta; a brother-in-law, Robert “Casey” Davis of Bangor; nephews, Jeffrey and James; a sister-in-law, Jean Labus from Baraboo; and three nieces, Katie, Molly, and Becky. She is also survived by the Urfalino family in the New York area.

     She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul, infant twins; daughter, Suzanne; son, Carl Sr.; sister, Myrna; and brother, Bill.

     Shelvie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her deep religious beliefs and her great sense of humor kept her strong during difficult times. She was a wonderful lady and will be greatly missed.

     A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 15, 2019 at St. John's Ev Lutheran Church, Sparta, with Reverend John Meyer officiating. Burial will be at a later time in Fairview Cemetery, Bangor.

     Family and friends are invited to call from 10 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the church. 

     The Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, is assisting the family with arrangements.
