Daniel "Dan" J. Burke

Daniel “Dan” J. Burke, 70, of Sparta, died Thursday, May 15, 2025 at Gundersen Health Systems, La Crosse. He was born on November 7, 1954 to Leo and Dolores (Olson) Burke in Sparta. He grew up there, and graduated from Sparta High School in 1972.

After high school, Dan attended WWTC and obtained an Associates Degree in Ag and Business. He lived in Fall Creek, WI and then came back to Sparta. He married Carol Johnson, and they later divorced.

Dan worked various jobs over the years; including Co-Op, and Walmart Distribution. He was a member of the Sparta Jaycees, and enjoyed volunteering at The Barney Center.

Dan loved spending time on his family farm, camping, and hunting. He was also an avid Brewers and Packers fan. He was a longtime member of the National Wild Turkey Federation and The Chairman of the local Monroe County Long Spurs Chapter.  He also enjoyed helping with the local Ducks Unlimited Banquet with his cousin, John Burke. For a number of years, he was an avid member of the Cataract Sportsmen’s Club, he liked running the Chuck a Luck game on their field day. 

Dan is survived by his sons, Daniel “Butch” Burke, of Sparta, and Brent Bock, of Sparta; daughter, Gwen (Adam) Lamb, of Warrens; grandchildren, Carter, Burke, Lara, Finneas, and Rutledge Lamb, and Kaleb and Olivia Bock; former wife, Carol Burke, of Sparta; sister, Bridget (Richard) Kimpel, of Sparta; niece, Morgan Simpson of La Crosse; good friend, George Gallup of Sparta; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Rebecca; cousin and good friend, Robert Burke; several aunts; uncles; and other relatives.

A Funeral Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home and Cremation, Sparta, with Reverend John Paul officiating.

Family and friends are invited for a visitation from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, at the funeral home.
