David Lewis Hering, 92, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026. David was born on April 19, 1933, in Sparta, Wisconsin, to August Hering and Ruth (Telyea) Hering.
David shared 72 devoted years of marriage with his beloved wife, Dorothy “Dot” (Spink) Hering. Together they built a life centered on family, loyalty, and quiet joy. Dave was a soft-spoken man with a gentle sense of humor that those closest to him cherished deeply.
In August of 1961, he began his long and distinguished career as Monroe County Clerk, faithfully serving the citizens of Monroe County for 35 years until his retirement in January 1996. He took great pride in his work and was known for his steady leadership, integrity, and dedication to public service.
Dave and Dot were avid golfers and bowlers and greatly enjoyed their time with their convertible club. In retirement, they treasured wintering in Lake Havasu, Arizona — a chapter of life they were especially proud of and often spoke about with fondness.
David is survived by his devoted wife, Dot; his daughters, Dory Baker (Mike), Debbie Hering (Brent), Deanna Hutchinson (Tom), and Denise Halverson (Mark); his cherished grandchildren, John, Natalie, Eric, Jason, Nicole, Macie, Tyler, Adam, Nina, Alexie, and Jake; and 19 beloved great-grandchildren. His legacy lives on in the large and loving family he helped create.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the compassionate staff at Rolling Hills Assisted Living and Nursing Home and Emplify by Gundersen for their exceptional care and support during his final days.
A Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2026 at United Methodist Church, Sparta, with Pastor Lourdes Magalhaes officiating. A luncheon will be held at The Greens, Sparta, following the service.
