David Meyer Obituary

David L. Meyer, 69, of Sparta, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2025 at his home as a result of ALS.  He was born on June 6, 1955 to Viola (Welch) and Harold Meyer in Red Wing, MN.  He was the oldest of eight children, and he graduated from Zumbrota High School in 1973.  David served for four years in the U. S. Air Force, from 1973 to 1977.  He then began attending North Central Bible College, and while there he met and married Judy Call in August of 1979.  He graduated from NCBC with a Bachelor of Science degree in Bible and Pastoral Studies in 1982.  He then served as a youth pastor, assistant pastor, and senior pastor in several churches in Minnesota and Wisconsin for a number of years.  After that, he stepped out of the ministry and wore many different hats in his work history, including construction work, farming, school bus driver, and self-employed as a handyman.  In 1996 he began working at Mathews, Inc. in Sparta.  He worked there for more than 21 years, part of that time making guitars at McPherson Guitars, a sister company of Mathews.  In the last few years, he has enjoyed making beautiful creations out of wood in his workshop.  He has sold his handcrafted wood products at farmer's markets, craft shows, and various stores in the area.

David's faith in God was important to him.  He had the privilege of doing some preaching at the Leon Congregational Church from May through October of 2024.  He also enjoyed using the talents God gave him to sing and play the harmonica and guitar in churches, homes, and senior care centers.

David was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, father-in-law, and step-father.  He is survived by his wife, Judy, of almost 46 years, his three sons, Justin (Brittany) Meyer, Joshua (Donita) Meyer, Jeffrey (Mary Beth) Meyer, one daughter, Jennifer (Nathan) Bergum, and twelve grandchildren.  Their names are Elizabeth, William, Jackson, Parker, Aiden, Nora, Tybee Joy, Isaiah, Liam, Boe, Archer, and Sadie.  He is also survived by his brothers Jerry, Dan, Terry, John, Randy, Tom (Josefina) Meyer, his sister Debbie (Dan) Call, his mother-in-law Eunice Call, his brothers-in-law Dan (Debbie) Call, Mark (Chris) Call, Marvin (Katy) Call, Duane Call, his sister-in-law Lois (Josef) Hill, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

There will be a memorial service for David on Friday, June 6, at 11:00 am at the First Congregational Church of Leon, 20752 State Hwy 27, Sparta, WI.  If the church parking lot is full, additional parking will be available at the Leon Community Center nearby.  There will be a luncheon in the fellowship hall following the service.
