Dennis D. Schaller, 76, of Sparta passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at Serenity House, Tomah. He was born August 3, 1949 to Leo and Adah (Freng) Schaller in La Crosse. He grew up in Bangor and graduated from Bangor High School.
Dennis married Virginia Wegner on November 25, 1967, in La Crosse. He enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1967 and served until 1971, when he was honorably discharged as Corporal. During his military service, he and Virginia lived throughout the US. He was also stationed in Okinawa, Japan. When they came back to the area, they lived in Bangor. Dennis worked for Milwaukee Railroad, and farmed; then went on to work for the US Government in Logistics, until his retirement in 2016.
In Dennis’ free time, he enjoyed carpentry, farming, and euchre. He was an active member of the American Legion since 2017 and served as the Commander of the American Legion Post 439, in Melrose from 2023-2025. He was instrumental in making improvements to the Legion in Melrose, as well as initiating the Legion Euchre fundraiser.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Virginia of Sparta; children, Dean Schaller of Sparta, Karena (Dana Horstman) Wegner of Bangor, Dan Schaller of Sparta, Douglas Schaller of Sparta, and Kendra (Robert Pierce) Schaller of Sparta; grandchildren, Lukas and Gabriel Wegner, and Haley, Xander, Kenobi, and Navy Ludke; siblings, Duane (Dawn) Schaller of Galesville, Forrest “Scott” (Helen) Schaller of Taylor, Joann (Scott) Schilling of Taylor; as well as many nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Donald and Donovan; and siblings, Leo "Bud", Ronald, and Alan "Stix" Schaller, and Karen Rhyme.
A Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home and Cremation, Sparta, with Chaplain Priscilla Hemmersbach officiating. Burial, with full military honors provided by American Legion Post 439, Neil S. Lewison, will be in Burns Cemetery, rural Bangor. A luncheon will follow at the Bangor American Legion Post #40, 401 15th Ave S, Bangor, WI 54614.
