Eileen Mae Herberg

   Eileen Mae (Aasen) Herberg, 71, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 16 at her home in Sparta.  She was born in Viroqua on November 1, 1948, the youngest of eleven children, to William and Florence (Lawrence) Aasen.  She graduated from Viroqua High School in the class of 1966.  While attending UW-LaCrosse she met and was joined in marriage to William Peterson and they later divorced. She later married Roger Herberg.  He preceded her in death on June 25, 2013.

     Eileen was very active, belonging to many social and civic groups, loved flowers and was a Master Gardener.  She belonged to the Leon Garden Club.  In Ihe Can't Miss a Thing group she participated in many outdoor sports and adventures.  Among other fun events were meetings of the Cheddar Reds red hat group and lunches with high school classmates.  Joined by grandson Damen they volunteered at the local cat shelter.  She was a board member of the Monroe County Health Organization and a former member of the Mayo Clinic Sparta Hospital Board.  She loved to travel and took many trips with family and friends, both in country and abroad.  She would gladly jump up and join in on any chance to play cards.

     Survivors are sons Cory of Eau Claire and Craig of Sparta, Peterson;  grandsons Lucas and Damen; brothers DeWayne (Artis), Bill (Janet), Ken (Martha);  sisters Mary (Clifford) Olson, Patti (Barry) Thomas; sister-in-law Marilyn Aasen, brother-in-law Elden Erickson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  Eileen will be sadly missed by special friend Joe Ziegler.

     She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Derek, and siblings Donald, Avis, Lorraine Peterson, Janice Erickson, an infant brother James, and brother-in-law Kenneth Peterson.

     A private family service will be Thursday September 3, from 3 to 4 p.m. and visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, 106 W. Franklin Street, Sparta.  The family requests flowers be sent instead of memorials. Wearing of masks and social distancing is recommended.  Plans for her cremated remains will be attended by family at a later date. 

     The family is grateful for all the neighbors and friends who shared her happy days and consoled her in her sorrows.  In addition to her family she will be greatly missed by those neighbors and friends and all who enjoyed the presence of her kind spirit and pleasant personality.  May she rest in peace.
