Freeman L. Walters, 95, of Sparta, died peacefully on Friday, July 14, 2023, at Tomah VA Medical Center Journey Home Hospice. He was born on September 24, 1927, to Louis and Anna (Brandt) Walters in La Crosse, He grew up and attended school in rural Viroqua.
On March 10, 1945 he married the love of his life, Hazel Snell. They farmed until he joined the US Army in1946. Freeman was stationed in Japan with the Army of Occupation. After service, Freeman and Hazel farmed until they moved to Union Grove and lived there from 1953 until 1966, raising four children and driving truck for KAT and then Kroeger Foods in Butler, WI for 10 years.
In 1966 he moved his family to Pleasant Valley in Sparta and resumed farming, He ran a successful dairy farm and sold Agri-King. He retired in 1992. He and Hazel then traveled to Alaska and spent winters in Texas, Arizona, Alabama, and Georgia. Summers were enjoyed taking trips up north to Hayward with his grandchildren. Fishing was his favorite hobby where ever he was.
Freeman was a member of the Gideons International and served in Jail Ministry in Monroe County. He was a member of First Congregational Church of Leon, serving faithfully on the board and teaching Adult Sunday School classes. His passion to share God’s word and love never waivered.
Freeman is survived by his children, Franklin Walters of La Crosse, Kathryn (Greg) Schmitz of Cashton, and Marlin (Debby) Walters of Woodville; grandchildren, Daniel Walters, Paul (Sherrie Kruger) Schmitz, Elisa (Mike Wozniak) Schmitz, James Heuer, Mackenzie (Bethany) Young-Walters, and Marie (Darrin) Berends; great-grandchildren, Jaxson, Logan, and Noah Heuer, Colten Schmitz, Maizey Wozniak, and Antigone Young-Walters; son-in-law, Keith Clipperton; and sister-in-law, Shirley Snell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Anna Walters; wife, Hazel; infant son, Larry Everett Walters; daughter, Kristy Clipperton; brother, Vernon Walters; sister, Lucille Petersen; son-in-law, David Heuer; and daughter-in-law, Lydia Walters.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at First Congregational Church of Leon with Reverend Donald Ehler officiating. Burial, with full military honors provided by VFW Post 8584 of Cashton, will be at Leon Cemetery, Leon.
Family and friends are invited for visitation from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the church and from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.
