Gerald DeWitt Sr. Obituary

Gerald Edward DeWitt Sr, 94, of Sparta, died peacefully at his home on December 22, 2021.

Gary was born in Sparta on June 27, 1927, to Ernest Dewitt and Nida (Stannard) DeWitt.  Throughout his long life, Sparta, Wisconsin was always considered home. He worked in the family owned business Beaver Creek Dairy from a young age through high school. He enlisted in the Navy in 1945, and after the Navy, joined the Merchant Marines and travelled the world. He met his wife, Madonna Wookey, during time spent at Rock Island Arsenal as part of his Merchant Marine career. He left the service, and they settled back home in Sparta, where the birth of his son Gary DeWitt Jr in 1957 made them a family.

Gary enjoyed so much in life. He loved spending time with his family, first and foremost; being at holidays, celebrations, and gatherings and was so proud of them. Gary put the “fan” in “fanatic”, following the Packers and saving every newspaper article and book for decades.  He also collected coins, a hobby he picked up during his travels. He liked to support the VFW and American Legion, having a small beer or two and visiting.

Gary especially enjoyed Laughlin trips with Gary Jr and family in his later years, where he and his wife had spent winters. He had a contagious laugh, loved a good card game and cocktail, and just being around those he loved.

Gary is survived by his grandchildren, Christina Lene, Mandy Rolstad and Gerald DeWitt III, along with many beautiful great grandchildren. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Madonna Wookey and son Gary DeWitt Jr.
