Gerald ‘Jerry’ H. Laxton passed away in his home, Friday, June 18th, 2021 at the age of 84 years. Jerry was born May 23rd, 1937 in Sparta, WI to the late Russell and Cora Laxton (Freeze).
Jerry married the love of his life, Carol J. Laxton (Goff), on February 24th, 1957. The two of them settled down and established themselves within the Sparta community, raising two sons, Robert (Bob) Laxton and Thomas (Tom) Laxton. They were married 61 years.
Jerry lived an adventure filled life, and while it is difficult to sum up an entire life, below are some of his most notable moments. Before reaching high school graduation Jerry had his mother sign for him to enlist in the United States Army National Guard. He was a medic and spent time at Fort Lewis, Washington, during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. Afterwards, he and Carol moved back to Wisconsin. Jerry owned and operated Foss Fine Meats with his brother and close friend for 47 years, selling in 1999. During that time he enjoyed volunteering on the Sparta Fire Department for 24 years, assisted on the Sheriff's department in the 70’s, and drove an ambulance for some time.
For fun, in the 60’s, he was an avid stock car racer with his brother and raced against drivers such as Dick Trickle and David Marcus at the Tomah Sparta Speedway. His racing days ended after rolling his car 8 times, but life did not slow down. He also owned The Farm with his brother and close friend. Much of his time was spent there with some of his favorite moments being fish fry’s, deer camp, holidays, and parties. The Farm was a gathering place for many, and it was filled with memories of his growing family and most cherished friends. Jerry and his wife Carol took many trips to Canada and enjoyed hunting and fishing regularly. He always adored having married a woman that enjoyed the outdoors as much as he did.
Jerry had many memories and accomplishments. He was known for his contagious laugh, genuine smile, and stories for every occasion. He lived an eventful life and regretted nearly nothing, he only wished he had learned how to fly helicopters when in the Army. He was a humble man that more than anything cherished the family and friends that surrounded him. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, son, and a highly adored grandfather.
Jerry is survived by his sons Bob Laxton of Sparta, WI and Tom (Amy) Laxton of Rhinelander, WI; grandchildren, Marie (Joshua) Johnson (Laxton), Melissa Horner (Laxton), Alex Brinker, Zachary Laxton, Jenna Laxton; great-grandchildren, Dominic Johnson, Riley Johnson, Karter Johnson, and Brigham Horner; many great nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones.
Jerry is preceded in death by his wife, Carol; his parents; brother, Richard Laxton and sister Lori Dunkel.
