James E. Davenport, 74, of Sparta, died Friday, February 24 2023, at his home. He was born April 17, 1948, to James and Judith (Schamens) Davenport, in Sparta. He grew up in Sparta.
James served in Job Corp, in Camp Atterberry, IN, in 1968. He eventually transferred to Ft. McCoy. He married Martha Littlejohn on April 26, 1969. They lived in Sparta their whole lives. James worked as a service station manager and drove semi for AAFES until his retirement in2002. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working, and watching the Green Bay Packers. He loved his pets very much.
James is survived by his wife, Martha of Sparta; children, Melissa (Jim) Wendorf of Sparta, Jerry Davenport of La Crosse; brother, Carl (Debbie) Davenport of Sparta; Maire Gutzmer, Elinor (Bill) Suhr, Adrienne Hove, Mary (Larry) Johnson, Marion (Randy) Amundson, Myrna Quist, and many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Judy Merow, Sally Cheek, and Karol Andrus.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home and Cremation, Sparta, with Reverend Donald Ehler officiating. Burial will be in Leon Cemetery, Leon.
A visitation will be held from 10 AM until 11 AM on Wednesday at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home and Cremation, Sparta. Online condolences may be offered at www.schanhoferfh.com
