Kathleen Mathweg Obituary

Kathleen C. Mathweg, 71, died Thursday, April 4, 2024, at Mayo Health System in Sparta. She was born April 28, 1952, in Waupun, WI to Roy and Aileen (Pruess) Mathweg. She was baptized on May 18, 1952 at Friedens Lutheran Church in Randolph, WI. She grew up in Randolph, and graduated from Randolph High School in 1970.

After high school, Kathleen attended UW-Whitewater, and graduated with a teaching degree, in 1974. Kathy, along with many of her peers, went on to earn her Masters of Education from the University of Wisconsin LaCrosse.  Kathleen spent her entire career teaching Business and Marketing Education at Sparta High School.  She was a trailblazer in marketing education, starting one of the very first school stores in the state, along with starting a DECA Chapter in 1976.  Kathy took pride in bringing the Reality Store to Sparta High School.  Her passion for teaching business led many students into careers that they currently hold today. She may never have had children of her own, but she surely mentored and loved many throughout the years. Kathy finished her teaching career in 2007, spending 33 years dedicating her life to Sparta High School and the community as a whole.

Outside of teaching, Kathy enjoyed golfing, bowling, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers. With all of these activities, friendships were made and many memories will be cherished forever.  The joke about her bowling was if her ball would ever make it to the pins, as it rolled so slowly!  Many of these fun times with Kathy, also known as Chaddy, Taz, Wig and Mathweg either started or ended at her favorite watering hole, where a stool always awaited her at the Market Bar.

It would be remiss not to mention Kathy and her kitchen!  She loved to cook, bake, collect recipes and cookbooks.  She never shied away from trying new recipes, and the staff loved to try them.  One of her favorite cakes she brought to school on St. Patrick’s Day was Creme de’ Menthe….oh so good!

Sparta High School students were not the only ones that benefited from Kathy’s knowledge and expertise.  Our community was blessed by her volunteerism to many different organizations at many different levels. Kathy was one of the first active members of the Business Professionals Women, as well as Retired Teachers Association, Ambassador of Chamber of Commerce, Sparta Boys and Girls Club Golf Committee and Sparta Lions Club.

Kathleen is survived by brothers, Gerald of Waupun, and Robert (Jane) of DeForest; sister-in-law, Darlene Mathweg of Randolph; 7 nieces and nephews; 11 great nieces and nephews; 6 great-great nieces and nephews; cousins; and numerous friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Richard; and niece, Michelle Mathweg-Ruddock.

Family and friends would like to thank Mayo Health Systems and Morrow Memorial Home for the excellent care.
