Marie L. Schmidt

Marie L. Schmidt, 93, of Sparta, died Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. She was born August 13, 1928, in the town of Farmington, rural Mindoro, to William and Edna (Pfaff) Lang.

Marie grew up in Brown’s Valley and graduated from Mindoro High School in 1946. After graduation, she went to work in West Salem doing restaurant work. The next 47 years, she continued to work in the bar and restaurant business. Ten of those years, she owned her own bar and restaurant. She enjoyed the outdoors and loved working with flowers. She enjoyed cooking and liked trying new recipes. Marie was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Marie is survived by her children, Janet (Herman) Brueggen, Jane Schmidt both of Sparta, Jill (Jim) Bray of Snohomish, WA, Janeen (Brian) Day of La Crosse and Jack (Julie) Schmidt of La Crosse; grandchildren, Lori (Todd Bernett) Mohring, Michelle (Monty Burnham) Brueggen, Kerri (David) Lamon, Jessica Schmidt, Andrea Parker, and John (Kim) Eckstrom; great grandchildren, Kanyen, Jazmine, Gabriella, Lavender, Finley, Aly, Blake, and Nora; brother, Eugene (Mary) Lang of Arizona; sister in law, Jean Lang of Colorado; many nieces nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her special friend of 40 years, Merlin James; daughter, Jenny Krueger; brothers, Richard and Norman Lang; sisters, Helen Niedfeldt, Margaret Schultz, and Rose Brown.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 21, 2022, at St. John’s Ev Lutheran Church, Sparta, with Reverend Jon Hackbarth officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow the service. Burial will be at Cataract Cemetery.
