Mary Boldon Obituary

Mary Anne Hanson Boldon, age 88, Rockland, Wisconsin, died on January 31, 2023, at Mulder Health Care Facility in West Salem, WI. She was born June 17, 1934, at the family home on French Island, Town of Campbell, La Crosse County, Wisconsin, the daughter of LaVerne G. Hanson and Lola O. Jenks.

Mary was a 1952 graduate of Sparta High School in Sparta, WI. She was employed several years at A&W Drive-in, Schultz Brothers Store, and Monroe County Telephone Company. She moved to Madison in 1953, employed as a payroll dept. keypunch operator.

Later that year she returned to Sparta where she married Reginald D. Boldon. They purchased the Boldon Service business on Wisconsin Street and built a home west of Sparta on Hwy. 16. In 1954 they assisted in construction of Boldon’s Motel, currently known as the Scottish Inn.

They  moved to Rochester, MN when Reggie became a representative for a Thorp Finance owned company. The family then lived in St. Paul five years and then South St. Paul for two years while Reggie managed Thorp Finance offices. During this time Mary was employed by St. Paul Drug Store as a department manager and buyer.

In 1963 Reggie was appointed manager of the Thorp La Cross office and a year later Chief Executive Officer of Sparta Federal Savings and Loan Association, holding that position for 22 years. During that period Mary was a partner in the construction and operation of rental units and development of four Sparta subdivisions. During 1967 and 1968 she managed Boldon’s Motel until it was sold. Mary and Reggie then built a home in Northwest Sparta where she raised her four children, Reginald Kim, Terry Lea, Bruce Alan, and Bradford Charles. In 1985 the family purchased the Cowboy Village business and property where Mary was the assistant manager.

After Reggie retired as a special agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company In 1988, Mary and Reggie semi-retired to manage 120–350-unit apartment and resort complexes in Madison, WI, Golden Valley, MN, and Minneapolis, MN. In 1990 they assumed management of a motel in New Ulm, MN. In 1997 they returned to Sparta to resume management of their own properties. They helped to subdivide the farm property (Riverwood Estates), former owned by Mary’s parents. In January 2009 Mary and Reggie moved to Rockland, WI.

Mary loved spending time with her family. She cherished her many dogs, raising Pekinese, Poodles and Shih tzu.  Mary had many close friends and enjoyed bowling and golfing, as well as trophies she won. She spent many hours doing needlepoint projects, always giving them to family and friends to enjoy for many years. Mary and Reggie traveled to Europe, Mexico, and Hawaii with family, as well as many areas in the U.S.

Mary is proceeded in death by her parents, LeVerne and Lola Hanson, her brother Virgil and his wife Esther Hansonand his second wife Betty Dill, her brother-in-law Kenneth Nichols,her inlaws Gerald and Helen Boldon,  her youngest son, Bradford Boldon (Kathy), and step-great grandson Logan Loeffler.

She is survived by her husband, Reggie; her children: Reginald Kim Boldon (Carol), Terry Loeffler (Darrell), Bruce Boldon (Cheryl), and daughter-in-law Kathy (Brad).  Mary and Reggie have six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.  Also survived by sister, Gladys Nichols, brother Arthur and sister-in-law Myra Hanson, brother Steven and sister-in-law Janice, sister-in-law Bonnie Coomes and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held for Mary with visitation from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM., followed by a memorial service at 12;00 PM, at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home located at 106 W. Franklin Street, Sparta, WI.

A private family burial will take place at the Boldon family site at Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta, WI.
