Max “Dusty” D. Barenthin, 75, of Cataract, died Saturday, December 26, 2020 at Tomah Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born on July 11, 1945 in La Crosse, WI to Erwin and Austa (Erickson) Barenthin. He grew up in the Galesville and Trempealeau area.
After high school, Max joined the US Navy and served during the Vietnam War. When he was honorably discharged, he started his own carpentry business. His last job was as a caretaker for Little Falls Group Home in Cataract.
Max married in his earlier years, had a son, and later divorced. He married Rita Jones on December 28, 1978 in La Crosse. They lived in La Crosse, West Salem and Cataract. Dusty loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of the American Legion Post 100 of Sparta.
Max is survived by his wife, Rita of Cataract; children, Stacey (Tom) Ziegelbauer of Denver, CO, and his son; 2 step daughters, Victoria (Paul) Kranz of Sparta and Lenore (Leif) Hanewold of Janesville, WI; granddaughter; step grandchildren, Zachary, Justine, and Derrick; great grandchildren; and a brother, Kurt (Marge) Barenthin of MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and Austa; brother, Erwin “Fred”; and sister, Sandra.
Per Dusty’s wishes, there will be no services.
The Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, is assisting the family with arrangements.
