Robert D. Munger, 94, of Sparta, died on Monday, November 20, 2023 at Tomah VA in Tomah. He was born on November 10, 1929 to Roy and Anna (Schwanke) Munger. He grew up in Sparta, and attended Sparta High School.
After high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After his Honorable discharge from the Army, Robert worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 40+ years as a mail carrier; both city and rural.
Robert enjoyed flying and tinkering with his airplanes; one of which he built himself. He enjoyed taking people up in his Ultralight plane. You could see him flying around Sparta.
Robert is survived by his sons, Donald (Jane) Munger, and Randy (Kari) Munger; five grandchildren, Hannah, Laura, Ian, and Maddie Munger, and Kristin (Brian) Betts; two great-grandchildren, Elsa and Lilah Betts; nieces and nephews, Alice (Andy) Durkin of TX, Phillip (Lorrie) Green of Sparta, Jeanne Beyer of Sparta, Anita (Lloyd) Schultz of Ettrick, Deborah (David) Drake of KY, Angela (David) Hughes of Mindoro, Stephen (Kelley) Becker of Sparta, and Wolfgang, Jurgen, Tomas, and Harold Spitzner from Germany.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith (Spitzner) Munger; two sisters, Gretta Trainer and Doreen Green; brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel and Rosemary Becker, Rolf (Marta) Spitzner, and Gerhard (Marga) Spitzner; nephews, Jack Green and John Trainer; nieces, Susan Becker and Kay (Tom) Reilly.
A big thank you to the employees at Mary Crest Assisted Living, where Bob was staying before he fell ill; and the 3rd Floor staff at Tomah VA Hospice. He received excellent care at both facilities.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at St. Mark’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 112 9th Ave. N, Onalaska; with Pastor Randy Fossum officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Cemetery, Sparta, with full Military Honors provided by American Legion Post 100 and VFW Post 2112.
