Vernon C. Leis

Vernon “Vern” C. Leis, 70, of Sparta, died Sunday, June 4, 2023 at his home. He was born on July 14, 1952 to Gerald and Marie (Barlow) Leis, in Sparta. Vern grew up in Sparta, and graduated from Sparta High School.

Vern married Barbara Marnach on March 17, 1973.  They later divorced. He met Carol Wallace in 1992.  They were married in 2014.

Vern worked construction with his parents at Leis Construction, which was sold in the early 90’s. He worked at Northern Engraving and the Foundry until his retirement. After retirement, he worked as a crossing guard, which he said was his favorite job.

Vern enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and golfing.

Vern is survived by his wife, Carol Leis of Sparta; children, Crystal (David) Gotthardt of South Haven, KS, Sara (James) Fennert of Sparta, Jeri Leis of Hutchinson, KS, Deanna (Andy) Anderson of Sparta, Julie (William) Statom of Tehachapi, CA, EJ Wallace of New Lisbon; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Marie; and sister, Karen Foellmi.

A celebration of life service will be held from 4 pm to 6 pm on June 16, 2023 at The Zone in Sparta.
