Bernard “Boney” W. O’Neil, 90, of Sparta, died Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Gundersen Health System, La Crosse. He was born in Sparta, January 6, 1927 to the late Dan and Hazel (Heineck) O’Neil.
Boney grew up in the Cataract area. He served his country in the U.S. Army from1945 until his honorable discharge in 1947. He married Ramona Brandt in 1948. To this union 3 children were born. He started farming in Sparta in the early 1950’s. He purchased Sun Drop Bottling Co. in 1968 and sold in 1974. Boney then worked at Northern Engraving in Sparta, until his retirement. He loved to hunt, fish, play cards, and spend time at his cabin in Winter, WI.
Boney is survived by his wife, Jeaneta; 3 children, Ross (Linda) O’Neil; Roger (Cindy) O’Neil; and Sandy (Steve) Fennigkoh; 6 grandchildren: Trevor (Jenny) O’Neil; Justin (Andrea) Fennigkoh; Todd (Marie Gemmell) O’Neil; Jessica Umstead; Sarah (Dave) Hall; and Chad (Jessica Fritch) O’Neil; and 9 great grandchildren. He is further survived by his brother and sisters, Virginia Murray; Dorothy Eddy; Lawrence “Butch” (Darlene) O’Neil; and Jack O’Neil; a brother and sister in law, Laurel Brandt and Dianna; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Hazel; his first wife, Ramona O’Neil; an infant grandson, Troy O’Neil; brothers and sisters, Elmer (Betty) O’Neil; Delores (Mike) Tracy; and Fritz (Marlene) O’Neil; brothers in law, Jim Murray; Roger Eddy; and Norbert Brandt.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 29, at the Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, with Rev. David Endorf officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by VFW Post 2112 will follow in St. John’s Ev. Cemetery, Sparta. Following the committal, there will be a Celebration of Life at Jakes Northwoods in Sparta.
